Autumn holidays is right around the corner, which for many of us means road trips to the cabin, the mountains, or to visit family. It's important to plan the trip well and be prepared for the conditions. Here are our tips for a safer autumn excursion!

You can save yourself unnecessary time behind the wheel by planning ahead!

Weeks 40 and 41 marks the autumn holidays here in Norway, and many Norwegians will spend a lot of their time behind the wheel. This makes it even more important to be aware of the challenges you may encounter. The Friday before the autumn holidays is the busiest day of the year, and is traditionally one of the worst days for traffic accidents at this time of year. In 2019, there were 1,500 traffic accidents on the Friday before the autumn holidays, and Norwegian motorists crashed for half a billion NOK during the two holiday weeks, according to Tryg Forsikring.

You can save yourself unnecessary time behind the wheel by planning both your itinerary and departure time. Instead of getting in the car straight after school and work on Friday afternoon, consider delaying your departure until later in the evening or the following morning. Traffic jams can also occur at times when there is normally less traffic, such as midweek.

During the autumn holidays, you can expect ignificant traffic jams on major exit routes.

For those heading to the mountains during the autumn holidays, it's essential to keep an eye on the weather forecast. If traveling to an area where there is a risk of snow, consider switching to winter tires before setting out on the trip. You are personally responsible for ensuring that the car is safe to drive, and gross negligence can result in fines and license suspension. Additionally, you risk the insurance company reducing or not paying compensation.

Studded tires must have a minimum tread depth of 3 millimeters. In Northern Norway, studded tires can be used from October 15th, while for the rest of the country, November 1st is the applicable date. Regulations allow the use of studded tires before the specified dates if conditions necessitate it.
