Safedrive Reward is a rewards program that rewards good behavior on the road. Over 40,000 participants are already competing for millions of kroner – every single week!
You may have seen that a possible ban on vehicle inspection notifications is being discussed again in the media. We can assure you that Safedrive is a completely legal service that will always comply with Norwegian law.
Safedrive is more than just a traffic alert. We are proud to be Norway's largest community along the road, and we are here to make driving better and safer for everyone.
Safedrive is not just about speed limit alerts. Our services also alert you to animals on the road, obstacles, speed cameras and speed limits. Speed limit alerts actually only make up 8% of all alerts we send out in a year. However, these alerts create an important boost in driver awareness, which helps reduce inattention – one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents.
A ban on speeding tickets will in practice lead to fewer tickets, which in turn could weaken road safety – in direct contradiction to the government's intention to reduce serious road accidents. Today, we contribute to the safety of 700,000 daily journeys, which could be lost with a ban.
85% of our users believe they have probably avoided accidents due to notifications.
Safedrive is a service that disseminates publicly available information and falls under the freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution. A possible ban would also raise EEA legal issues, as it would constitute a restriction on the free movement of services and the right of establishment in the EEA. The government would have to prove that such a ban is both appropriate and necessary – and there is no documentation to support that a ban would actually improve road safety.
The available documentation and research shows the opposite:
At Safedrive, we have always been clear: Notification of breathalyzer tests is not allowed. Deliberate abuse leads to banning from the service, and we are constantly working to minimize the risk of false notifications. Our latest software gives users the ability to provide feedback and unregister false notifications directly from the device.
To ensure that breathalyzer tests are completely excluded, we have invited the Emergency Police (UP) to cooperate – a solution that has worked very well in several European countries. This cooperation can completely eliminate false notifications of breathalyzer tests. Unfortunately, this option has not yet been used in Norway.
We believe in collaboration for safer roads – a shared responsibility where we see each other and help each other. Our invitation to collaborate still stands, and we hope to put in place a solution that benefits both traffic safety and trust on the roads.
In the meantime, the rest of us must continue to do what we do best – namely, look out for each other in traffic.
