Breaking the traffic rules has become far more expensive in recent years. On February 1, the new fine rates for 2023 were published, and new this year is a solid 30 percent increase for both speeding and mobile phone use.

Norway has some of the highest fine rates in Europe, and now breaking traffic rules is getting even more expensive.

The last time the fine rates for speeding increased was in March last year. Back then, exceeding the speed limit by 36-40 km/h resulted in a fine of NOK 11,600, while in 2023 the fine will be NOK 15,100. Illegal mobile phone use is also being cracked down on: The fine for illegal mobile phone use increased last year to NOK 7,450, and now it will set you back NOK 9,700. The new fine rates are a result of the Ministry of Transport's proposal for a 30 percent increase in the rates.

This is the price list for the new rates:

When the speed limit at the location is 60 km/h or lower and the speed limit is exceeded:
Up to and including 5 km/h: NOK 1,100,-
Up to and including 10 km/h: NOK 3,000,-
Up to and including 15 km/h: kr. 5,400,- (+ 2 points)
Up to and including 20 km/h: kr. 7,800 -(+ 3 points)

Mobile phone use is a dangerous distraction in traffic, and getting caught for illegal mobile phone use will now cost you even more.

Increase in other rates

It is not only speeding and illegal mobile phone use that will now be punished more severely. If you run a red light, you will now have to pay NOK 9,700, compared to NOK 7,450 last year. The same applies if you follow too closely behind the vehicle in front of you. These offenses, including mobile phone use, will also result in three points on your driving record, just like in 2022.

Other offenses, such as driving a motor vehicle in violation of traffic signs, will incur a fine of NOK 7,800, compared to NOK 6,000 in 2022.
