A new feature makes it easy to check how many penalty points you may have on your license and how long you have them.

It's now very easy to check how many penalty points you have.

Most traffic violations result in either two or three penalty points on your driver's license, and each point lasts for three years. If you got a couple of speeding tickets a few years ago, but can't remember exactly when, it's not surprising that you don't know how many penalty points you have today.

What it takes to lose your license

You lose your driver's license for six months if you accumulate eight penalty points. Three speeding fines may be enough, but it depends on how much over the speed limit you were driving.

You get penalty points if you are caught by a speed camera, or if the police stop you for an offense that warrants penalty points. f you're caught for multiple offenses at once, you get as many points as the total offenses combined. At the bottom of the article, you'll find an overview of how many penalty points different offenses result in.

If you think you might be in danger of losing your license due to another speeding fine, it can be reassuring to know that the police will notify you if you have four penalty points. The purpose is to enable you to change your driving behavior in time. And, fortunately, points on your license do not last forever, as they are removed after three years.

Requested feature

Many people want to be able to keep track of their penalty points themselves. The police have therefore launched a function that allows you to do just that. You can find it on politiet.no, where you need to log in with an electronic ID.

- This is something we've wanted for a long time. Many people wonder how many penalty points they have, and not least when the date on the oldest penalty points expires. This is something we are constantly being asked about, says District Manager Geir Marthinsen of UP in Northern Norway to the newspaper Nordlys.

New drivers need to pay extra attention

The first two years after obtaining a class B driving license are a so-called probationary period. During this period, you get twice as many penalty points as usual for an offense. This means that it only takes half as many points before the license is revoked.

It only takes half as much for new drivers to lose their license.

Help to avoid penalty points

The traffic alarm Safedrive Pro alerts you about speed cameras and other speed controls, which are the most common cause of penalty points on the driver's license. Thus, the alarm makes you aware if you're potentially driving too fast, allowing you to slow down in time. Users of the popular traffic alarm say that Safedrive Pro has saved them from many fines and made them drive more safely.

Safedrive Pro and the system of penalty points on the driver's license actually have the same purpose: to contribute to increased road safety. In addition to alerting you to controls and speed cameras, Safedrive Pro alerts you to hazards, animals and obstacles along the road.
