If you drive one of these cars, you are more likely to break the speed limit

It is estimated that as many as eight out of ten people drive too fast. Based on 77 million kilometers driven, the insurance company Fremtind has found out which car owners most often break the speed limit.

Are you surprised by which car brand tops the "Offender List"?

The figures revealing speeding violations are from 2020 and 2021, collected from 5,000-7,000 active users of the now discontinued Smartbil app. All car brands with at least one million kilometers on the road are included in the overview.

Speeding violations can lead to everything from annoying speeding fines and minor damage to the car to very serious accidents with personal injuries.

- Adhering to speed limits is one of the most important things we do to prevent injuries in traffic, says Therese Nielsen of Fremtind Forsikring to DNB.

The Safedrive Pro traffic alarm reduces the risk of all this by alerting you to speed controls, making drivers more attentive. The "Offender List" below can give you an indication if you are among those who would benefit greatly from such warnings.

The "Offender List"

According to Smartbil's figures, Skoda drivers have the most speeding violations, but Tesla and Audi drivers follow close behind, sharing the second spot on the offender list. BMW is not far behind in third place. The distance to the next car brand on the list, Volkswagen, is slightly larger.

The percentage behind the car brand indicates the proportion of registered driving that has occurred at least three km/h above the speed limit.

  1. Skoda (14.6%)
  2. Tesla and Audi (14.3%)
  3. BMW (14.0%)
  4. Volkswagen (12.5%)

These most often adhere to the speed limit

If we turn the "Offender List" upside down and look at the car owners who most often follow the speed limit,, it is drivers of Asian cars who are most law-abiding, but we also find a French car brand among the top three. The car brand driven by the most law-abiding drivers is Suzuki, closely followed by Honda. Renault and Toyota follow in joint third place. Opel is not far behind either.

  1. Suzuki (9.6%)
  2. Honda (9.7%)
  3. Toyota and Renault (10.1%)
  4. Opel (10.4%)

If you drive a Suzuki, there's a greater chance you adhere to the speed limit.

Gender differences across car brands

Fremtind has also sorted the data by gender. Perhaps not surprisingly, men generally drive faster than women. Among men, those who most often exceed the speed limit drive Skoda. Among women, however, it's Tesla drivers who most often exceed the speed limit. The female drivers who least frequently exceed the speed limit drive Suzuki, while their cautious male counterparts drive Hyundai.

Fewer exceeded the speed limit in 2021

The numbers show that there were fewer speeding violations in 2021 than in 2020. Therese Nielsen at Fremtind Forsikring says the decrease was almost 20 percent.

- There are many factors at play, she adds.

Perhaps the Safedrive Pro traffic alarm is one of them?
