With 24 green and zero red weeks in Safedrive Reward, Ivar Forsland became this year's winner of the super draw and one million kroner richer.

Here, Ivar Forsland from Drammen is notified that he has won one million kroner. Among over 50,000 drivers, he was the one who walked away with one million kroner in this year's super draw in Safedrive Reward.

Over the past year, over 50,000 drivers have signed up for Safedrive Reward. Together, they have contributed 457,397 green weeks, contributing to demonstrably safer traffic across the country.

Driving a lot – and driving green

The winner of this year's super draw is 70-year-old Ivar from Drammen, who has been using Safedrive for almost six years. He drives around 30,000 kilometers a year, and says that Safedrive has made him more aware behind the wheel.

– When you're on the road so much, it's really good to drive safely and nicely, and get alerts about animals, obstacles and stops on the road, he says.

During the year, he has achieved 24 green weeks, which corresponds to 24 tickets in the draw. He has no red weeks, which means he has stayed within the speed limit the entire period.

There was both a good atmosphere and a touching moment when Molly called Ivar to tell him that he had become one million kroner richer.

– I thought it was a scam

When the phone rang, Ivar was initially skeptical.

– “Huh, are you kidding?” was the first reaction, he told Namdalsavisa . Ivar checked both the phone number and the company thoroughly before he dared to believe the message.

"There's so much fraud out there. I had to be absolutely sure," he told the newspaper.

The money comes in handy. Ivar and his wife recently ordered a new apartment, and have had to pay half a million kroner in advance – money they didn't have before the win.

Rewards that work

– We want to change the way we think about speed. Rather than believing in the stick, we believe more in the carrot that brings lasting change, says founder and CEO of Safedrive, Magnus Wester.

Safedrive bases its traffic safety work on three complementary pillars:

Training – organizations and professional communities build knowledge and attitudes
Sanctions – authorities set limits and follow up on risky behavior
Reward – Safedrive rewards safe and desired behavior behind the wheel

– The zero vision cannot be achieved with just training or just punishment. With rewards as the third pillar, we can help change driving patterns over time and make safe driving attractive, says Knut Ove Børseth, Head of Sustainability and Society at Safedrive.

– We do not replace police or training, but complement them. Safedrive Reward rewards good behavior instead of punishing bad. It provides motivation, ownership and engagement among drivers.

During this year's super draw, Knut Ove Børseth was able to talk about how rewards are used to create lasting change in traffic. Here with Molly Pettit, who led the draw.

Norway's most important car game

Safedrive Reward is referred to internally as "Norway's most important car game", and is a form of gamification of road safety. Drivers can follow their own driving profile and collect points, while driving data is automatically recorded via the Safedrive device and compared with current speed limits from the National Road Data Bank.

– It's really about motivation, small habits, and people becoming more aware of it when they're out driving, explains Børseth.

In total, Safedrive has around 265,000 users, and so far over NOK 3.1 million has been distributed to drivers who drive according to the speed limit.

– We see that more and more people are making a solid effort to achieve a green driving profile. And we can easily conclude that they are experiencing a positive, lasting change in traffic, based on actual data, he says.

– It is quite unique in the traffic safety collection.

New Reward period is underway

After the super draw, the points have been reset, and a new Reward period has already started. Everyone who drives green is automatically included in:

  • Weekly draws of 10,000 kroner
  • Monthly draws of 100,000 kroner
  • An annual super draw of 1,000,000 kroner

Norwegian road safety work has for decades been built on two pillars: training and sanctions. With Safedrive Reward, we get a third pillar in road safety work – rewards.
Every month, 100,000 kroner is awarded to socially beneficial causes through the Tryggve Fund. In July, the support went to Sveberg Danseklubb and Malvik Red Cross, who make the local community a better place to be!
